pretty lives
by Roberto Lavidez

things
may be
very pretty
to read
very pretty
to think
about
we live
lives
based on
selected
fiction
or poem
from another
time and
another world
the realities
we inhabit
could be
constructs
of our
imagination
we are
essentially
alone
seeing only
the phantoms
of memory
or imagined
memory
a fidelity
to something
infinitely
greater
and more
truthful
the rest
of life
we let go
as it will
or we
could be
inhabiting
a setting of
astonishing
tranquility
where once
the newly
grown grass
is pulled
will disclose
a mass grave
one could
believe
he was
in the
lowest
circle
of hell
as if the
woe had
appeared
without
any human
rhyme
or reason
where
violence
and suffering
is so
widespread
that it is
casually
called
meaningless
we could all
be walking
in mysteries
we do not
know
what is
stirring
in the
atmosphere
the more
certain
you felt
it was
coming
the more
you
dreaded
it
like being
in a place
where
the rupture
in the past
had been
so absolute
that the
place
had never
existed
before
like going
out for
a walk
along the
embankment
in a bitter
wind
a rare
sharpness
comes down
when you
swallow
danger
you thought
you knew
the real
world
by heart
and
used it
only
as a means
to express
the world
of your
beautiful
soul
when the
water has
ebbed away
the dry land
would expose
the ugliest
things
saying
farewell
to your
guarded
innocence
