gates of brass

by Roberto Lavidez

from the mansions of
the wealthy and the
shanties of the poor
one almost hears the
voice of the dead past
no one rises to the
gravity of the occasion
rebellious children
swarming as bees
are flogged
into obedience
the abyss that each
one has within himself
is surrounded by
incessant tongues
babbling follies
the most dangerous
wound ever inflicted
as if all mankind
were Hamlets
staining  the pages
of history
fruits of which are
squandered in every
part of the globe
no assistance
to keep order
and tranquility
the tyrannical impulse
of mastering men
so as to coerce them
at their peril to accede
nothing can be more
undignified
vultures hovering
above the doomed
they have drunk
too deeply of
human blood
spineless books
had nothing else
to say other than
high emotions and
cannibal appetite
the rules of the game
the laws of nature
had better stay
on those shelves
an excursion into
the future is stalled
the quantity of truth
still undiscovered
kept inside
the gates of brass
unspoken by
lower creatures
who witnessed
the direst crime
