all things Hayden

by Roberto Lavidez

all things
alter
even as I
behold
all things
alter
the stranger
said
odor of
a dripping
carcass moans
beneath
the hot
fragrance
of carnations
cool scent
of lilies
we dropped
trivial tasks
and marveling
beheld at last
the achieved
flower
shadow of
a face in the
scary leaves
shadow of
a voice in
the talking
leaves
in sun-
whetted
morning
the dropped
gull splayed
on sand
shadow
of time
shadow
of blood
shadow
echoed the
Zulu king
dangling from
a cluster
of balloons
I cross
the boardwalk
to the beach
lie in the
sand and
gaze beyond
the clutter
at the sea
cosmic Ouija
what is the
mathematics of
your message
how shall
the mind
keep warm
save at
spectral fires
I yearn
I yearn
and if I
dared
the agonies of
metamorphosis
as human
colors
in our
inhuman
world
burden
break
I whisper
but shrink
from the
arms that
would
embrace me
skeletons
were gleaning
famine fields
horrors
multiplying
like cancer
cells
sharks
following
the moans
the fever
and the
dying
it is
beginning
oh it begins
now
breathes
into me
becomes
my breath
who knows
if it was
heavenly
design or
chance
behind us
beyond us
now
is phantom
territory
flee amigo
for the dead
are angry
grotesque
outsider
whose
unnaturalness
assures them
they are
natural
time was
a cry?
a cry
all right
flee
lest the
vultures
pick our
bones
life has the
symmetry
of a cross
we lived here
when
under a spell
we have
awakened
we are here
what did
I know
what did
I know
of love’s
austere and
lonely offices
where new
mythologies
of power
come to
birth
swiftly
descended
into canyon
of cold
nightgreen
emptiness
fed the fires
that consume
us now
the fire that
will save
then whirred
spiraling into
the sky
vanished
as though
it had
never been
