sorting out
the fictions

by Roberto Lavidez

the golden rule
is that there are
no golden rules
standing amid
the surging
murmur
of life’s
restless sea
in the midst
of the
upward
thrust of
goodness
there is the
downward
pull of evil
creating
friction
based on
the lives of
others and
one’s own
imagination
embedding it
with vivid
details that
it would be
difficult
to sort out
the fictions
far beyond
the grasp of
any individual
the power
to stand alone
is worth
acquiring at
the expense
of much
sorrowful
solitude
the welding
together of
many disparate
elements
far more veneer
than substance
would seem
to exacerbate
the cycle
all dream-bubbles
must eventually
burst at a final
wakeful touch
allegory reduced
to the desperation
of mixed metaphor
pushing the laws
of probability
to their limits
which may
turn out to be
quite different
from our current
expectations
unrequited
interludes
had churned
into a full-blown
embarrassing
obsession
there is
something
wistful and
a little pathetic
in all this
to follow
equally fallacious
argument to
equally absurd
conclusions
through false
virtues
with which
people kidded
themselves
enforcing
if necessary
the unwritten
rules of the
shotgun
