Tribute

by Roberto Lavidez

bronzed statue
staring down
bloated vagabonds
glued on concrete
under glittering skies
of empty promises
mouth agape
uttering flies
that land on
drumbeat bellies
prodding
for a salute
to its sculpted myth
on cemented fate
stained by the blood
of an anemic
revolution
the proud figure
still standing tall
waiting for the
wreath in the morn
to be laid by
calloused hands
not from labor
but from the
weight of gold
while snoring souls
pay tribute
by snorting solvents
shrinking brains
to a size of a nickel
hacking
spitting phlegm
at the cold face
that missed
the milk can
of loose change
the same face
worn by the
towering figure
they now call
home
