Tate misfiring

by Roberto Lavidez

it is good
to live
surrounded
by books
because
you never
know what
can happen
next:
I shook
my head
and stood up
something
was terribly
wrong
an egg
was hatching
in my hand
the egg of
an otter
otters don’t
lay eggs
but I was
starving
time passed
like a
butterfly
in the room
suddenly
I was in
a bathtub
sinking
it felt
like 1945
like everything
was finished
I remember
at some point
I had leeches
on my face
an American
soldier
offered to
remove them
I thought
it’s too soon
to harvest them
they’ll get
much bigger
once I sat
on the toilet
in the lobby
of the
wrestling
amphitheater
for several
hours
astonished
that this was
my life
my only life
and I have
nothing
better
to do
than
sit there
what I
thought
was infinite
will turn out
to be just
a couple of
odds and
ends
a tiny
miscellany
miniature
stuff
fragments
of novelties
of no great
moment
this is
the hardest
part:
when I
came back
to life
I was
a good
family dog
and not
too friendly
with strangers
the lull
dispassion is
upon us
serenity has
triumphed
in its
mindless
atrophied way
a school
of stoics
walks by
eager
in its
phlegmatic
way
to observe
human
degradation
lust and
debauchery
at close
quarters
some people
go their
whole lives
without
ever writing
a single poem
extraordinary
people who
don’t hesitate
to cut
somebody’s
heart or
skull open
the man
sitting
next to me
on the
airplane
said he was
an international
arms dealer
he also said
that he had
written poetry
in his youth
and that
it had
made him
very happy
and that
he wasn’t
quite sure
why he had
quit it
and how he
had ended up
doing what
he does now
you haven’t
scribbled
a syllable
of it
you’re a
nowhere
man
misfiring
the very
essence
of your life
flustering
nothing
from nothing
and back again
a thunderclap
scared me
half to death
I was just
sitting
in my chair
growing
a beard
my brain
lit up like
a pinball
machine
and I prayed
for order
now
it’s really
calm
almost
too calm
as though
anything
could happen
and it
would be
a first
it could be
the worst
thing
that ever
happened
they ask me
if I’ve ever
thought about
the end
of the world
and I say
come in
come in
let me
give you
some lunch
for god’s sake
after a few
bites
it’s the
afterlife
they want
to talk about
the heavens
opened
the heavens
closed
the weather
was inventing
a new way
of expressing
itself
and then the
phone rang
I couldn’t
tell if
it was
a tv phone
or my own
I sat up
half-asleep
and reached
for the phone
Howie
a woman’s
voice said
is that you?
you sound
like you
were asleep
I was
I said
I wasn’t
Howie
but I was
in the mood
to talk to
this woman
Howie
I miss you
I wish
I were
in bed
with you
right now
she said
I miss you
too
I wish you
were here
with me
right now
I said
speaking
of sunsets
last night’s
was shocking
I mean
sunsets aren’t
supposed
to frighten you
are they?
well
this one
was  terrifying
people were
screaming
in the streets
I saw
the president
on tv
yesterday
he was
shaking hands
with a farmer
what if
it wasn’t
really
a farmer
behind every
great man
there sits
a rat
and behind
every great rat
there’s a flea
beside the flea
there is an
encyclopedia

Octavio Paz:
precarious pause

by Roberto Lavidez

there is
nothing
inside me
but a large
wound
a hollow
place
where
no one
goes
a windowless
present
a thought
that returns
and repeats
itself
reflects
itself
and loses
itself
in its own
transparency
I find
myself in
the middle
of an eye
watching
myself in
its blank
stare
the moment
scatters
motionless
I stay
and go:
I am
a pause
I do not
write
to kill
time nor
to revive it
I write
that I may
live and
be revived
the time
is past
already
for hoping
for time’s
arrival
the time
of yesterday
today and
tomorrow
yesterday
is today
tomorrow
is today
today all
is today
suddenly
it came
forth
from itself
and is
watching me
I fall through
myself
without
touching
myself
I fall through
my center
far from me
far off
I am here
and I
don’t know
where here is
what day
is today
between
night and day
there is an
uncertain
territory
it is neither
light
nor shadow:
it is time.
the hour
the precarious
pause
the darkening
page
the page
where I write
slowly
these words
my thoughts
split
meander
entwine
start again
and finally
are immobile
endless
rivers
delta of
blood
beneath
a sun
without
twilight
all is visible
and all
elusive
all is near
and can’t
be touched
papers
book
pencil
glass
rest in
the shade
of their
names
time
throbbing
in my
temples
repeats
the same
unchanging
syllable
of blood
I write out
on your body
the scripture
of the world
a knowledge
still nameless
the taste of
this earth
the objects
fall
they are
in a state
of falling
they fall
from my
mind
that thinks
them
they fall
from my
eyes
that don’t
see them
they fall
from my
thoughts
that speak
them
they fall
like letters
letters
letters
a rain
of letters
on a derelict
landscape
warring
thoughts
want to
split my
skull
this writing
moves
through
streets of
birds
my hand
thinks out
loud
a word calls
to another
words
glitter in
the shadows
and the
black tide
of syllables
covers
the page
sinking
its ink
roots
in the
subsoil of
language
the word
leaps in
front of
thought
in front
of sound
the word
leaps like
a horse
in front
of the
wind
like a
sulfur bull
in front of
the night
they’ve come:
a few birds
and a black
thought
murmur
of trees
murmur
of trains
and engines
is this
moment
coming
or going
the prisoner
of his
imagining
weaves
and unravels
his weaving
sightlessly
scrapes at
his scars
plays games
with the
letters
of his name
scatters them
and then
they insist
on the
same havoc
set in
the setting
of his
corroded
name
this writing
over the
written
the repetition
of the same
word in
mid-poem
syllables
of time
broken
letters
splotches
of ink
blood that
goes and
comes
and says
nothing
and carries
me with it
I draw
these letters
as the day
draws its
images and
blows over
them and
does not
return
a day
is lost in
a sky of
hurrying
the light
leaves no
footprints
in the
snow
a day
is lost
doors open
and close
the seed
of the sun
soundlessly
opens
a day
begins
talking with
the things
and with
ourselves
the universe
talks to itself:
we are
its tongue
and ears
its words
and silences
a stirring
a steering
a seed
asleep
a word
at the tip of
the tongue
unheard
unhearable
matchless
fertile
barren
ageless

more by
more Cumm
ings

by Roberto Lavidez

all by all
and deep
by deep
and more
by more
they dream
their sleep
no one and
anyone
earth by
april
wish by
spirit and
if by yes
what beneath
breathing
selves
transported
are into how
suddenly
so huge
a home
(only more
than
immeasurable
dreams
wherelessly
spiraling)
beyond
time’s sky
into a truly
curving form
enters
my soul
feels all
small facts
dissolved
by the
lewd guess
of fabulous
immensity
the sky
screamed
the sun died
meantime
in dreams
let us
investigate
thoroughly
each one
his optima
rerum
first
having taken
care to lie
upon our
abdomens
for greater
privacy
and lest
punished
bottoms
interrupt
philosophy
dark on us all;
stories told
returned
gather the
again: who
danc  ing
goes utter  ly
churning
witty
shouting
to see
what
no  mind
knows a
mindless
he begins
to guess
what if a
much of
a which
of a wind
gives
the truth
to summer’s
lie;
bloodies
with dizzying
leaves
the sun
and yanks
immortal
stars awry?
all history
oped her
teeming womb
said demon for
to doom
yea (fresh
complexions
being oke
with him)
one William
Shakespeare
broke the
silence
of the
tomb
love was
and shall be
this only
truth
(a dream
of a deed
born not
to die)
but worlds
are made
of hells
and goodbye:
glad sorry
or both
(big
little
and all)
love is
more
thicker
than forget
more
thinner
than recall
more seldom
than a wave
is wet
more frequent
than to fail
the whole
truth
not hid
by matter;
not by
mind
revealed
(more than
all dying life,
all living
death)
and never
which
has been
or will
be told
sings only –
and all
lovers are
the song
you shall
smile
my smile
love
my eyes;
my eyes
have stroked
the bird of
your soul
the bird
my poems
concentric
aritmetics of
transparency
slightly
joggled sink
through
algebras
of proud
inwardlyness
to collide
spirally
with iron
geometries
i do
excuse me
love
to death
and time
storms and
rough cold
wind’s
menace
and leaf’s
grieving:
from the
impressed
fingers of
sublime
memory
of that
loveliness
receiving
deeds
cannot
dream
what dreams
can do
time is a tree
(this life
one leaf)
but love is
the sky and
i am
for you
just so long
and long
enough
wherelings
whenlings
(out of dark
the earth)
a procession
of wonders
huger than
prove out
fears
were hopes:
the moon
open
for you
and close
will shy
wings
of because;
suppose
life is an
old man
carrying
flowers on
his head
young death
sits in
a café
smiling
a piece
of money
held
between
his thumb
and first
finger
and
something
thought
or done
or wished
without
a little
innocence
although
it were
as red
as terror
and a green
as fate
greyly
shall fail
and dully
disappear -

from the underground

by Roberto Lavidez

I imagine
the earth
when I am
no more:
nothing
happens
no loss
it’s still
a strange
pageant
women’s
dresses
dewly lilacs
a song in
the valley
will any
dream
of mine
so run
wakeful
through
more than
twenty
centuries?
why is it
when love
which men
call deathless
is dead
that memory
men call
fugitive
will not die?
is love
not dead?
what in
our lives
is burnt
in the fire
of this?
the heart’s
dear granary?
the much we
shall miss?
sat by
the water
for hours
watched
nothing
but water
how it was
spelt out
by light
cut grass
lies frail:
brief is the
breath
mown
stalks
exhale
long
long the
death
let the
grey dust
thicken on
the landings
let the
spiders
tick in
the wall
let the locks
rust and
the keys
be lost
as in the
last century
the crowded
trains
taking us
away from
home
became
our baby
baskets
rattling
to foreign
parts
our exodus
from death
this is a way
of creating
the world
again
of seeing
differences
of piling
shadow
on shadow
of showing up
distances of
bringing close
bringing close
what does
this heart
which once
was silence
need
if not
those words
which are
both sign
and prayer
to save
from death
decay
and ruin
the actual
moment of
vision and
surprise
and keep
in the real
world
the real
gesture
of a hand
touching
the table
my century
is a sad one
of collapses
the concertina
of the chest
the tubular
bells of the
high houses
the flattened
ellipses of
our skulls
that open
like petals
they are
not long
the days
of wine
and roses:
out of a
misty dream
our path
emerges
for a while
then closes
within a
dream
born free
to be caught
and fashioned
and shaped
and freed
to wander
within a
caged
dream
of tears
I’ve known
rivers:
ancient
dusky rivers
my soul
has grown
deep like
the rivers
but what
is that
clinking in
the darkness?
maybe we
shall know
each other
better
when the
tunnels meet
beneath
the mountain
the waves
blue walls
of Africa
go and
come back
when
they go
ah
to go
with them!
ah
to come
back
with them!
when they
come back…
almost
without
noticing
without
thinking
it seems
you’ve arrived
where you
see far
if you will
tell me
why the fen
appears
impassable
I then
will tell you
why I think
that I can
get across it
if I try
eternal spirit
of the
chainless
mind!
brightest
in dungeons
liberty!
food’s perfume
breath is
nourishment
the stars
crumble
salt above
eucalyptus
fields
a spring
of love
gushed from
my heart and
I blessed
them
unaware
like the
sun rising
and setting
like the
thunderous
roar of
a bull rhino
like the sleek
quick grace
of a gazelle
the player
springs into
the eye
and lights
the world
with fires
of a million
dreams
a million
aspirations
the sun
lightens the
significance
of what the
houses are
steeped in
brightens out
their winter
brooding
dry leaves
were banners
for night
fishermen
but now
stunted trees
stand still
beheaded
a curious
sight for
the tourists
how hard
it is
to say
what it was
like in
the thick
of thickets
in a wood
so dense
and gnarled
the very
thought
of it
renews
my panic
