after all the havoc
by Roberto Lavidez

men
are dogs
for one
another
affirming
one’s
solidarity
with
the world
at its
worst
after all
the havoc
has been
wreaked
life is
grown
too cheap
set at the
price of
words
the inner
uncertainties
the inner
darkness
into which
man
has fallen
the cold
abyss
poisoned
by solitude
and alienation
from star
to star
from death
to death
matching
the pounding
of blood
with the
violent
pulsation
of the sun
the perennial
moral
predicaments
of human
history
thinking
about
things
beyond the
intelligible
breeding
doubt
branching
upwards
toward
heaven
while
the root
is stuck
in the earth
rendering
hope
obsolete
that we can
perhaps gain
a better
understanding
of our enemy
and of ourselves
but we cannot
possibly fathom
life beyond
our present life
that there
does exist
such a thing
as truth
come into
being
in the course
of time
like finding
freedom
in any
meaningful
sense of
the world
like a ripple
on an
unfathomable
enigma
the ironic
contrast
and the
inexplicable
silence
hiding
in the
magnificent
folds of
eloquence
lurking
in the facts
of human
existence
of having
come upon
something
unmistakably
real
wandering
on this earth
restored
to the
despair
of innocence
with careless
contempt
for the
evanescence
of all things

common failure
by Roberto Lavidez

to love
the idea
of people
more than
the people
themselves
to abandon
all heartwarming
certainties
in favor
of a lonely
skepticism
would have
to bear an
abnormal
burden
an optimum
condition
for historic
upheaval
a black hole
from which
no human
light can
emerge
solving
the problems
of mankind
acquired in
a hundred
centuries
of trial
and error
forgiving
nothing
demanding
everything
consists in
a common
failure
to learn
from the past
we live in
a society
which is
dissolving
although
the end
may yet
be a long
time coming
and some
of the rules
are in need
of a thorough
overhaul
but the
immoral
theatre of
the world
is simply
bizarre
there remains
an unuprooted
small corner
of evil
for even
the best
of all hearts
and hoping
that a new
species of
free man
would arise
from the
ashes of
catastrophe
is making
the world
a safer
place for
hypocrisy

pretty lives
by Roberto Lavidez

things
may be
very pretty
to read
very pretty
to think
about
we live
lives
based on
selected
fiction
or poem
from another
time and
another world
the realities
we inhabit
could be
constructs
of our
imagination
we are
essentially
alone
seeing only
the phantoms
of memory
or imagined
memory
a fidelity
to something
infinitely
greater
and more
truthful
the rest
of life
we let go
as it will
or we
could be
inhabiting
a setting of
astonishing
tranquility
where once
the newly
grown grass
is pulled
will disclose
a mass grave
one could
believe
he was
in the
lowest
circle
of hell
as if the
woe had
appeared
without
any human
rhyme
or reason
where
violence
and suffering
is so
widespread
that it is
casually
called
meaningless
we could all
be walking
in mysteries
we do not
know
what is
stirring
in the
atmosphere
the more
certain
you felt
it was
coming
the more
you
dreaded
it
like being
in a place
where
the rupture
in the past
had been
so absolute
that the
place
had never
existed
before
like going
out for
a walk
along the
embankment
in a bitter
wind
a rare
sharpness
comes down
when you
swallow
danger
you thought
you knew
the real
world
by heart
and
used it
only
as a means
to express
the world
of your
beautiful
soul
when the
water has
ebbed away
the dry land
would expose
the ugliest
things
saying
farewell
to your
guarded
innocence

threat of insignificance
By Roberto Lavidez

a new
eden
where
all
mankind
can be
induced
to fall
is surrounded
by the
flames of
enchantment
trying  to
go on
living
despite
everything
the vanity
and transience
of human life
facing
and battling
with those
forces
destined
for total
darkness
man is
in a state
of mind
where
distinction
between
good and
evil is
obliterated
our lack
of understanding
of our worldly
motives
succumb
to uncertainties
and doubts
with the
threat of
insignificance
facing
us all
the
letting
go
of the
past
the
ending
of past
ties
and
attachments
one is
trapped
in a
frenzied
world
where
nothing
lasts
everything
in it
is blending
together
in a
vague
and
incommunicable
dream
the universal
coatrack
on which
to hang
all of life’s
unpleasantries
is on the
brink of
collapse
man’s
greatest
snare
is his own
illusions
about
himself
foolishly
struggling
for some
ideal
or another
an eternal
dreamer
indulging
in the
goods
of the
material
world
where
everything
is permitted
until the
cumulative
burden
of conflict
becomes
too great
increasing
the
capacity
to be
savage
to one
another
the greatest
suffering
arising
from
betrayal

by Roberto Lavidez

brooding
heavily
over the many
different shapes
and forms
human beings
can take
a floundering
mind can
scarcely
encompass
the lie
invented by
inborn
malice
a shameless
lie from
beginning
to end
plunged over
into the
ugliness
of privilege
undeserved
intuitively
striving to
find a way
out of the
dilemma
drinking
the moonlight
and the
west wind
drowned
in poetic
impression
forcing
mankind to
unite into
a harmonious
society
but sacred
blood has
already been
spilt on the
threshold
of the temples
a tortuous
path from
the hopes
of extending
the boundaries
of our existence
to an experiment
asking to
be born
with the
absolute
and the
absurd
under
the wheel
of history
which
in the midst
of things
may be
concealed
or rewritten
woven
together
and worked
into a
complex
narrative
but each instant
as it breaks away
from contradictions
is annihilated
like a
fleeting cloud
passing
in front
of the sun
which can never
be deceived
leaving
the world
nothing
but the glitter
of stars
