prescription
to immortality
by Roberto Lavidez

somewhere
in this desert
of a world
sudden rage
broke
the last remaining
barriers of resistance
crouched low
in the shadows
trapped
in the nightmare
shackled
by despairs
it is not easy
to resist
the dreams
of humiliated people
troubled by
the record
of untruth
all the hypocrisies,
lies, subterfuge,
faithlessness,
purified under
the influence
of empty mountains
he who could
contain and survive
elements of pain
in the dark
embarking on
a wild journey
through the
landscape
of the soul
cleaning up
the air
to nourish
spiritual hunger
until one could find
the prescription
to his own
immortality
expecting nothing
changing nothing
leaving nothing
behind
standing alone
against
the floodtide
of revolution
breaking
the habit
of disappearing
and reappearing
like a mirage
or the balancing
of joy
and tragedy
the ludicrous
confessions
about what
actually happened
in real life
in a wild spate
of words
punctuated
with explosions
of obscenity
sallies of
good humor
interspersed with
mockery
and threats
destroying evidence
of the hand of fate
requiring no
mental effort
spotting
the mythmaker
at work
as one learned
to cheat
in order
to survive

impenetrable
by Roberto Lavidez

the poet contemplating
the maelstrom of change
launches into a recitation
of grievances
clenches his fist in a rage
with pressing desire
to be in the middle
of things
leading discussions
of grammatical and
allegorical exegesis
worshipping
the ideas and ideals
that are forbidden
with intent on
politicking any situation
lambasting tragic
tradition of subservience
and obscurantism
attacking the system
that made beasts of men
praising a few heroes
who told the truth
and risked their lives
those who tried to
preserve their dignity
who were crushed
and thrown away
he somehow sees the
profound aspects
of human nature
despite the fact
the entire historical
experience is literally
crying out about the
inevitability of conflict
and hopelessness
in constant danger
he writes from a
sense of adventure
interfering with
divine purpose and
prophesies of the
so called enlightened
his consciousness is
mired by conflicting strains
of schizophrenic revolt
capable of multiplicities
of meaning he embodies
secret societies manipulating
the intellectual
and political life
of theworld
penetrating the untamed
and virtually unexplored

for now his mind is
a  B  L  A  N  K
as uninked paper
still muttering
“By God, I’ll show them.”

where are we going
by Roberto Lavidez

what have we learned
where are we going
the ordinary man
hesitated between
dismissing and tolerating
a sort of fog
of unsolved
desire and sadness
clever at knowing
conventional histories
of men and ideas
but not at living
under prevailing
conditions
recognizing his
own insignificance
throwing stones
aimlessly into the sea
incapable of seeing
the little drop
and the ocean are
the same thing
the very simplicity
of the scheme
the mysterious
angular forms
in shadow
losing faith
in the growth
of potentialities
turns his intinct
backward against
man himself
the blockage of
freedom
a horrid little
refusal to have
nasty thoughts
beyond the surface
of happiness and
goodness
waking up to
something slightly
unbalanced about
the whole composition
losing some form
of control that renders
it useful to civilization
the contradictions
between idealized
images demonstrated
in absolute darkness

the flow
by Roberto Lavidez

a flow
enters
into another
flow
showing its
inextricability
from the
sinews
of time
and light
the quiet eye
at the center
of the whirlpool
making a hash of
our understanding
of our place in
the cosmos
entering rules
and definitions
into chains of
reasoning
including critical
revisions and
rejections of
theories
a beginning
of the end
of ideology
showing how
the circle might
be squared
after all
exorcising
the ghost
in the machine
stamping
a shape onto
formless minds
shores teeming
with wretched
refuse
shadowed by
a long history
of losses
from waged
battles of
opinion
antagonisms
have survived
after killing
one another
over trivial
insults
perpetuating
the injustices
of the past
victims would
be inhabiting
an imperfect
body in a
fallen world
so consumed
with lust for
retribution
hushed whisper
turning into
a shout
refracted through
the deeply willed
deceptions
the black hole
becomes
a home

indispensable quest
by Roberto Lavidez

if the long
endangered
world is felt
to be too great
a menace
diminished or
exhausted by use
and can never
replenish the
automatized
it will engender
a movement of
revolt giving
great impetus
to the spread of
indispensable
quest for ecstatic
transcendence
indulging in the
memories of
bygone experiences
stringing pearls for
the joy of heaven
following a guardian
spirit toward the sky
articulated by ritual
and myth rooted
in the chemism
of the organism
emerging from
beneath the earth
the passionate stirrings
of an agonizing
inherently insoluble
problem which
proclaims its own
brutality of
conscience
as eternal law

a chasm
by Roberto Lavidez

there is
something
in dreams
that seems
to be
thrusting
through
a chasm
that would
stretch
to the edge
of the world
a whole army
of invisible
and intangible
monsters
caught
in a sort of
collective trap
unleashed
under cover
of ideology
questing
towards
the absolute
where truth
and falsehood
become equal
to one another
lost
in a flood
of confused
and rambling
verbiage
vanishing
like a ghost
as soon as
you try
to grasp it
it’s mere
oblivion
the sleep
of mind
the impossible
state of our
existence
our whole
being
bears
within itself
a death
instinct
an aggression
sweetened
by love

of rocks and bones
by Roberto Lavidez

looking
at history
at the narrative
of rocks
and bones
all of us are
vanquished
victims
of the ravaging
great swath
of earth
strewed about
in a haphazard
mess
amid a spasm
of communal
bloodletting
the monster
is far from
tamed
in a landscape
disappearing
under concrete
thunder rumbled
and rain drops
drilled the earth
the further one
probed into the
human evolutionary
path
must of necessity
build on the ruins
seeking an inner
sanctum within
a wilderness
but once it was gone
it could'nt be
imagined anymore
as if wandering
through a museum
stripped of its
artifacts
a telling sign
of a restive nation
with the expected
consequences of living
